Can fulfilled prophecy show that the Bible is from God?

Yes. The Bible presents fulfilled prophecy as a reason to believe that God has spoken. God describes Himself this way:

Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

Jesus explained why He told His disciples things before they happened:

Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.

The prophecies pointing to Jesus

The prophecies pointing to Jesus are especially significant. Micah named the town from which Israel’s ruler would come, seven centuries before He was born there:

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

Matthew records Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem and explicitly connects it with that prophecy (Matthew 2:1-6).

Isaiah described a suffering servant who would bear the sins of others:

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

When an Ethiopian reader asked whom Isaiah was describing, we are told plainly what the answer was:

Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

Examine each prophecy on its own terms

We should examine each prophecy carefully: what it originally says, whether it preceded the event, and what evidence establishes its fulfillment. A claimed resemblance alone does not settle those questions - the next page looks at how we know these texts predate what they describe.

The Bible’s own explanation for true prophecy is this:

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Fulfilled prophecy invites us to trust the God who speaks - and to recognize the Saviour to whom the Scriptures point.
