Has science disproved the Bible?

No. Science has not disproved the Bible, and by its nature it cannot. Science studies how the created world regularly works. The Bible tells who made it and why. These are not competing answers to the same question.

Creation testifies to its Maker

The Bible itself sends people to study creation, because creation testifies to its Maker.

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.

A Christian therefore has no reason to fear honest investigation of the world. The world is God’s, and finding out how it works is finding out what He did. Many founders of modern science were believers who studied nature for exactly this reason.

What the Bible says about the world has not been shown false

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

It describes the earth as suspended in space and speaks of its roundness, long before either was common knowledge:

He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.

It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; and he stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

The usual conflict is with a philosophy, not a finding

The Bible also describes the very people who would one day claim that everything has always gone on as it does now:

Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

Where conflict is claimed, it is usually not between the Bible and observed facts but between the Bible and the assumption that nothing exists beyond nature. That assumption is a philosophy, not a finding. Paul warned about it:

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

The King James Version even uses the word directly:

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

Here “science” means knowledge. Paul is not warning against studying the world, but against claims to knowledge that set themselves against God’s Word.

Miracles are not a violation of science

Miracles are the usual objection. But a miracle is not a violation of science; it is an act of the One who made and sustains the laws science describes.

For with God nothing shall be impossible.

Science can say that dead men do not rise by natural processes, and the Bible agrees. It never claimed Jesus rose by a natural process. It claims God raised Him, and offers the evidence of witnesses:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present.

The resurrection is a historical claim, tested by testimony, not a laboratory claim tested by repetition.

Human knowledge has limits

The Bible also reminds us that human knowledge is limited, and that what is called settled in one generation is often overturned in the next.

Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.

On questions of origins, such as the age of the earth, Bible-believing Christians hold different views about how Genesis is to be read, while agreeing on what it teaches: God created everything, deliberately, by His word, and man is not an accident. Science can describe processes; it cannot see the hand behind them or rule it out.

In the end the question is not whether the Bible can survive science, but which one has proved the more durable:

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

The Bible has outlasted every theory that was said to have buried it. It does not ask anyone to stop thinking. It asks them to think about who made the mind they are thinking with.
